In Opposition to Kavanaugh (A Letter To Your Representative)

I write as your neighbor, constituent, and fellow American. I write as your Sister with an eye for service, justice, peace, and truth. I write to you to urge you to stand for a FULL AND COMPLETE investigation of the allegations against Brett Kavanaugh. Frankly, I write to urge you to oppose Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court.

Even if Brett Kavanaugh did not assault and attempt to rape Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, his unwillingness to accept an investigation speaks only to a lack of faith in the Judicial System; if he is innocent, why not have it proved by the very court he claims to devote his life to? Accepting a presidential easement on the limits of the case can only dissolve American trust in the legal system; how could this serve his potential term, or, for that matter, any human involvement with the courts? The system only works if the law applies equally to all. What we see in Kavanaugh’s behaviour - his own and what he accepts from others - is a frightening readiness to let the law apply differently to him. Why would we trust that he will not continue in this vein, on his behalf or on anyone else's?

Furthermore, even if Brett Kavanaugh did not assault and attempt to rape Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, we now have credible character witnesses who attest to Kavanaugh’s longtime drinking habits (drinking to the point of blacking out, belligerence, aggression, violence). Habits which Kavanaugh denies. How can we stand by and let someone omit and lie about his behaviour as he insists on his ability to lead in the highest court in the land? How can we stand by and not hold him accountable?

I write as your neighbor, constituent, fellow American. I write as a woman who - alongside every woman you know - has endured a lifetime of assaults and harassments, large and small, from men who let the law apply differently to them.

I write to say that I see you, and that I hold you accountable as a public servant, an officer of peace and justice, and as a neighbor. You are accountable to every human in this nation to participate in a just legal system and a fair and open democracy. You are accountable to every woman in this nation to make sure that the people in power see us and uphold the law in our names, too. Every American in every state, you are accountable.

You are accountable to yourself. You must sleep in your own bed with a free conscience, a quiet mind, and a clear heart, knowing that you have not damaged the lives of others, knowing that you have served the law and the love of your neighbors.
